Cells and energy - Video for Hawthorn Academy Science ClassesCells and their processes
This Achievement Standard covers  types of cells, cell organelles and the cell processes: transport across the cell membranes, enzymes and their action, Photosynthesis, Respiration and DNA Replication.

The following video is a good summary and comparison of cell life processes - Photosynthesis and Respiration in plants:

How cells obtain energy: Jeremy Christensen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8c5JcnFaJ0.
This video explains the processes associated with cellular energy processing.

Important vocabulary -
chloroplast, photosynthesis, mitochondrion, respiration, pgal (phosphoglyceraldehyde) ADP, ATP

Key words for this standard are many and you need to regularly review your work to build up an understanding of the many terms you need to know.
Making flash cards is one way to help you.
Previous NCEA papers provide the best guide to what is required and the level of detail you need to put into your answers.
Changes have been made to this standard when the curriculum was reviewed so take special note of these changes e.g. What factors affect the rate of mitosis?
What factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
This standard was not done well last year by students at the college so thus year you need to focus on the requirements for Merit and Excellence.  As it is the first standard taught in the year, you need to revise the material very well.  Last year both Photosynthesis and Respiration were examined which was a change from previous years.  MAKE SURE you revise all sections of this standard for the end of year assessment.
