Junior Activity Week 

Year 9 - 10
The learning area of Health and Physical Education is all about promoting total well-being. It also promotes learning through movement. It explores the concepts of physical well-being, mental and emotional well-being, social well-being and spiritual well-being.

Year 11 - 13 Senior Physical Education 
The focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health related and movement contexts. In physical education, the focus is on movement and its contribution to the development of individuals and communities.

Where does Physical Education, Health and Outdoor Education lead?

Students can follow a variety of career pathways if choosing subjects in this area. There are many courses at all levels for students at educational institutions both locally and nationally where the student can follow their specific needs and goals in this area of sport and recreation and education.

Students then have the chance to follow a career pathway that might lead them into sports science, physiotherapy, sports coaching, teaching or other fields.

Year 11  PHED1, SPSC1 & OUED1 Options
Graduates of Physical Education have a variety of career paths to choose from.  These are from any physical environment, such as the fire services, defence forces, police to professional employment as physiotherapists, teachers and sports related fields. 

Level 2 Physical Education (PHED2)

You will learn to:

  • apply skill learning principles, anatomy and bio-mechanical principles in a sporting context
  • use methods and principles of training to improve your performance in a 3km run or 400m swim
  • plan and teach a junior class using leadership strategies
  • perform an activity to meet national standards.

Level 2 Sport Science (SPSC2)

You will learn to:

  • demonstrate leadership in a physical activity
  • participate in various physical activities
  • perform a physical activity to meet PE performance standards
  • apply interpersonal skills and social development through participation in ABL
  • demonstrate a range of knowledge surrounding sports coaching and groups
Level 2 Outdoor Education (OUED2)

You will learn to:

  • participate in rock climbing to apply functional anatomy and biomechanical principles to improve your performance
  • participate in indoor rock climbing and kayaking to meet performance standards for level 2
  • apply leadership and risk management strategies through your performance in tramping

Level 3 Physical Education (PHED3)

You will learn to:
  • participate in a physical activity and describe how this influences your well-being
  • create a personal training programme designed to enhance your own performance
  • appraise your own performance in a physical activity and evaluate the effectiveness of program designed to enhance your performance
  • critically analyse current issues concerned with physical activity in New Zealand

Level 3 Sport Science (SPSC3)

You will learn to:

  • plan, perform and evaluate a coaching session for junior students
  • understand how people learn new skills and also the most effective way of teaching them
  • plan and perform exercise techniques safely in a weights room
  • appreciate how the body functions during physical activity
